Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961)

Jung’s effect and significance spreads beyond the borders of psychology. His works not only sum up the knowledge pertaining to psychology, but, always based on his own practical experiences, Jung takes it further – and, if need be - reinterprets the theories of his colleagues. It gives rank and prestige to a science that was at that time still young and which, even today, is still looked down upon, that he put both his scientific and his cultural heritage to use in the interests of psychology . He discovers bold, exciting often provocative analogies, identities and contradictions within psychology, mythology, alchemy, and even literature. Although his knowledge is impressively rich, Jung is far from being an exhibition. He speaks approvingly but not without criticism about his predecessors and temporary colleagues, yet he never forgets to emphasize the importance of constant development and the necessity that therapy should be formed around the client rather than searching for a client to match a theory.

The Practice of Psychotherapy

The first published volume of the series The Collected work of C. G. Jung examines the most important questions of psychotherapy. Lectures held at different times and locations reveal the essence and outstanding questions of psychotherapy while providing a widespread review of the history, results and outstanding people of the discipline. A separate chapter deals with the theme of psycho catharsis and dream-interpretation in which he examines these theories from the side of their practical application. To explain the transference of emotions he uses a series of medieval alchemic pictures which lead to the exploration of new and exciting connexions both for the benefit of psychology and alchemy. The practice of psychotherapy was written based on special professional experience, and it proves giant accomplishment that requires attention and engrossment from the reader. Jung uses scientific expressions bravely and consequently since he considers the reader an equal intellectual partner rather than a dilettante to be told off. The book not only provides interesting reading matter, but is a key to the understanding and comprehensive reception of the author’s additional work.
